Notoriously Delicious. That was the tagline I proposed to the owners of The Red Hen restaurant in Lexington, Virginia, to help brand this fine restaurant as it re-opened after it briefly became the target of a conservative boycott.
The owners of The Red Hen contacted me to help develop some products they could sell, not only at the restaurant, but also online to meet the requests from an enthusiastic and expanding national fan base. My first recommendation was to create a chef’s quality embroidered apron, followed by a number of possible designs for imprinted T-shirts, bumper stickers, hats and the like, including a refinement of Chef Matt Adams’ idea for a riff on The Ramones’ iconic seal, which as itself a riff on the presidential seal. I refined the restaurant’s original logotype, produced all the mechanical art for embroidery and silkscreen products and helped them find a local sportswear fabricator to produce and potentially fulfill mail order shipments.
The result? The initial order sold out quickly, the restaurant restocked, and the products continue to sell steadily nationwide.
“What we appreciate about Robert’s work is his true spirit of collaboration. He took our ideas — some of which were rough, some more fleshed out — and came back with a terrific variety of options for how they’d look. Through give and take, we ended up with a refreshed brand and a slate of products we’re really proud of. We definitely could not have done it without him.”
